Reverend Samuel Johnson envisioned the need to organize a specific program that would generate activities for the benefit of senior citizens in the Thornton Road and surrounding areas. Consequently, he convened a meeting on October 26, 1994, at 11:00 A.M., at the New Adka Missionary Baptist Church. During this meeting, the center was designated as the New Adka Area Nutrition Center. Dr. Wilkerson from the East Alabama Planning Commission was in attendance and elucidated the Commission’s role in sponsoring a nutrition center. Ms. Cobb, also from the East Alabama Planning Commission, was present, providing the fundamental principles of organizing a nutrition center. The Center was established on the aforementioned date with the objective of offering at least one balanced meal per day, along with fostering fellowship and recreation for seniors.
Rev. Johnson appointed officers, with Faye Moore and Evelyn Johnson designated as Center Coordinators. The Advisory Committee comprised Louise Henderson, Betty Hall, Helen Johnson, Dorothy Rochell Greathouse, Rosa Hughes, Johnny Russell, and Ralph Hall. Ann Moss assumed the role of Secretary, while Cliff Henderson and John E. Moss took on the responsibilities of Treasurers. Helen Pugh was appointed to assist the treasurers, and Corky Taylor became the liaison between the Center and the Commission.
Rev. Milner and Rev. Pulliam were also present, offering their remarks and support for the crucial cause. A decision was made to select a name that would more aptly serve the entire community and surrounding areas, leading to the renaming of the center as The Thornton Area Senior Center. Monthly meetings were scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month at 11:00 A.M. until plans were finalized to meet the necessary guidelines for establishing a daily operating nutrition center.
At present, lunches and refreshments are generously provided by local churches, organizations, and individuals. The East Alabama Planning Commission in Anniston, Alabama, has played a vital role in supplying bag lunches upon request. Each monthly meeting features an invited speaker presenting a program to the seniors, covering a range of interesting, exciting, and informative topics and demonstrations. Special occasion and holiday programs are also organized by the seniors, along with various games and recreational activities.
Since its organization, the Center has experienced an increase in attendance, with over thirty seniors regularly participating, and the oldest member being 91 years of age. The ultimate goal is to establish a fully active nutrition center in the near future, and with God’s continued help, WE WILL!
